Building an Art Car
I've wanted to build an art car for ages. The first time I went to Black Rock City, in 2001, I was stunned by the beauty, creativity, ingeniousness and sense of play embodied by the Mutant Vehicles which glided across the Playa at night, with their colorful illuminated forms, as if out of a surrealist’s dreamscape.
Last year my BRC coolaborator and I spent the better part of a day trying to help a friend with MS find a ride around the Playa. We ended up borrowing a bicycle rickshaw from Hot Wheelz Camp and taking her around ourselves. Coolaborator was real champ and a hero, doing all the pedaling.
So, this is what I want to do. I want to build a vehicle large enough for at least me and a passenger, but preferably, me and two passengers. One of the passenger spaces should accommodate a wheelchair or scooter safely and securely.
And of course, it should be imaginative. And beautiful. And fabulous and lit at night in a stunning, attention-getting manner.
And that's about it. Well, it's ambitious, but with the right people involved it could happen. I would like to do it before I leave Southern California.
