Here be raison d'etre
The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my last years in Southern California, as I formulate and carry out my plan to leave. In the process, if I'm successful at keeping up with it I will also be creating a journal of my last months here.
The name, "Five Percent Embellished" refers to the famous statement by James Frey, who wrote a book, A Million Little Pieces, purporting to be a memoir. It was for a short time a cause celebre on the self-help circuit, but then fell from grace when found to be, at least in part, "embellished." Frey told the viewers of the Larry King Live talk show that an embellishment ratio of 5 percent was ''appropriate for a memoir.''
My own reasons for "embellishing" are simple: I wish to obscure my true identity while here on the internet, to protect my privacy. Embellishments on these pages are thus designed to hide facts about myself that would identify me. For the most part, I intend to cleave fairly closely to the truth in the substance, if not the details, of my life.
